Yeah I've been slacking

Monday 12:35 PM EST Don't worry, even though I'll have just landed I'll post more stuff about what I did for my loyal readers and mostly myself, even spent a decent part of my movie watching on the plane writing myself notes.

Ol Pejeta / Sweetwaters

9:21 On the road now to Samburu. Should be 3ish hours I think. I guess I had my first proper game drive experience at Ol Pejeta which is a private conservancy or something along those lines I was told. When we arrived we went straight into a drive with the intent to check in later.

10:26 I guess this is the part where I wish it were easier to look at my pictures while typing this since it's hard to take about the game drive in proper sequence without it. Basically what the drive is is driving though the reserve's many paths and hoping you'll see interesting things. So that's what we did. Notable highlights during that drive were seeing a herd of rhino sort of chase away a lioness and her cub (seeing the lions also a highlight), at some point I took a short video but they were passing right behind the car and I got scared so I sat down. Also got to see a black rhino up close they keep in an isolated area because he's blind and would not be able to survive in the wild as it were. Got to feed him some bamboo and everything! Felt bad for the fellow because he seemed to have two relatively fresh wounds on his side which was coated with mud and a literal mat of flies. Saw a giraffe, zebra, buffalo, water backs? Antelopes of various names, some gazelles, warthog, a couple of elephants, and other assorted wildlife. Also got to see a couple of chimps at a sanctuary they keep for rescued chimps. One thing I realized is how nice optical zoom would have been for picture taking, digital zoom can only do so much unless animals right next to me. Also discovered black rhinos only have that name to differentiate then form white rhinos which in turn only have their name from mishearing 'wide' rhino in reference to their snout.

After that we were dropped off at the lodge for lunch and a break. Lunch was that buffet style thing again. One thing that seems to be the norm here is that the buffet is included but drinks are charged separately, and I don't mean like alcohol, just any drink. Walked around lounge area a bit, it has a watering hole right next to it, and was generally very pretty. It was my first experience with a tented camp which I don't know if this place is representative of. It was very nice inside the tent with a luxurious looking bed, plugs and a ceramic floor tiles bathroom.

11:13 Small interjection from gas pitstop. I'm really terrible at handling people trying to sell me things. Someone tried to get me to buy some bracelets while we were filling up and was very insistent. "just for promote", "something little to get some coca cola", aaaah, I'm so bad at saying no even though I managed to get him to go away by giving him one of those free pens you get from events. In retrospect I forgot I don't have other pens so I'll have to procure one since they're good to have for airports. Anywho, back to the events since it seems this pit stop might go long due to an issue with one of the tires.

After the break we went out for another game drive hoping to catch more lions (unfortunately we didn't, spoiler) though we did see a a bunch more of the other animals. Seeing herds just doing their thing is very cool. One thing I'll have to do if I come back is make sure it's the dry season or that El Niño isn't wreaking havoc on expected rainfall because so many of the tracks were tricky or not really passable. The highlight of the second drive was definitely towards the end where we were almost enveloped by an elephant herd, they were sooo close. At one point a female elephant was standing right in front of the car staring us down, kind of spooky in retrospect. The driver said just being quiet was enough because unlike makes the female ones are less likely to try and assert themselves against something our size. Whew! That level of closeness was pretty great.

We eventually went back to lodge, where I walked around a bit until it was dark, got ready for dinner and was a bit startled that a couple of rhinos were just chilling by the watering hole. Dinner unfortunately had a new selection of desserts which meant I had to try them all again. After dinner not much to do, so since this time wifi kind of worked I read some Manga (Pandora Hearts, very good recommendation!) and passed out around 10? Something around that. I tried to catch sunrise again this time waking up at 6 but was too late again qq, so if the next place has a good view I'll do 5:30. Then breakfast (tree tomato juice not bad) and check out. Now on road to Samburu again and should be around 20 mins away~

Should have been less lazy and done this yesterday so I could attack pictures since I have some good ones, oh well.

Assorted ramblings

9:16 There wasn't much to do at the hotel since it got dark not much after I arrived so I had dinner and slept early then breakfast and then drive to Ol Pejeta / Sweetwaters camp to see things. I'll just ramble a list of things I skipped:

The shower at Naivasha was possessed the second time I used it, you know that joke about the sweet spot on the faucet between burning and freezing water? It was like that but without touching the faucet.

Mosquito nets are everywhere, usually canopying the bed. At Naivasha at night it was scary since I could see tons of mosquitoes just waiting on the ceiling.

So many dirt roads that have been badly badly hurt by rains, the driver has to do some next level maneuvers at times to avoid troughs and mini lakes.

I think of towns we pass as strip towns due to the similarities to a strip mall where things and stores are aligned along the main road with storefronts painting the contiguous wall different colors, you can then see back roads to camps / housing.

People seem obsessed with moving my suitcase around when entering / leaving places.

Something about things I see driving reminds me of Venezuela bit I can't quite put my finger on it.

Battery packs definitely op for long drives, phone usage with picture taking included.

Though most people seem to speak Swahili, most ads are in English.

El Niño is making it rain more than usual, gg my timing.

I still can't get enough of the typical African acacia that peppers the landscape. Definitely feels so alien. Seeing a vast empty plain and a lone acacia is somewhat moving? Idk.

I can see why people seemed surprised I was doing a safari alone, the vehicle easily fits 6 more people and then one could share rooms, gg.

How many more ramblings can I fit before we arrive!

I noticed I'm shy about photographing random things with people I know around, or of like the towns and people there in.

Oh, just made it, guess that answers s that question. Ol Pejeta, hi.

Nairobi, night 2, Naivasha, drive

8:20 Mostly writing this from the perspective of the next morning since I didn't really get a chance to type much during the night. We left off when I was waiting to be picked up from the church by Wambui and her brother which eventually happened as mass was letting out, haha. Her brother Kim was really cool, studying management/marketing while working.

10:51 Got sidetracked mid-entry above so will continue with the what happened soon. For now though I'm waiting at the Intercontinental Hotel to start a drive to Naivasha. 10 minutes he said... 40 minutes ago, no, I'm not impatient. Nooope. Ahem. Anywho, as to how we got here. After begin picked up we drove back to their house and had some nice conversation in the car, seems like Black Friday is a thing here now even though Thanksgiving isn't, what a world. We got to their house where they...

Monday 7:36 Kept getting distracted by people talking to me and things and probably won't be able to sum up everything before breakfast in 2o minutes. So, so, we got to their house and I was introduced to their mom and dad who seemed like nice people though didn't get much chance to talk to them. While waiting for someone to pick us up they were watching the 7 o clock news which apparently commands the most expensive advertising block, not bad. We also had a grilled corn on the cob though it was a bit different from what I'd had before with bigger kernels and it was slightly charred giving it an almost popcorny flavor. They also were eating it with their hands by sort of pushing the kernels out, which seemed to work since it was relatively dry, I tried it but couldn't manage it very well so just used my teeth. Eventually someone came to pick us up and we headed to Brew Pub Bistro which is seemingly a nice bar in those there parts that brews their own stuff. We picked up Wambui's friend Joy (different Joy) on out way there.

Once there the place was pretty nice, relatively fancy/upscale but not a crazy amount. One of their friends was there already waiting with two giant pitchers. I'll admit so far beer is still beer to me, haha, and have yet to really be wowed by any, even Tusker which my uncle affirms is the best in the world. Anywho, we chatted there for a while, though it was a but tricky to hear sometimes due to that obnoxious tendency places have to BLAST loud music. At some point a bunch more of their friends arrived, seemingly students though I'll be honest, I didn't really catch how they knew each other. They disappeared for a while as we talked some more but eventually came back.

3:54 On my way to Nanyuki for the night. About an hour and a half left out of 3 and a half. This time my previous writing got sidetracked by breakfast. I have to say on this long drive the amount of random speed bumps would infuriate me if I were driving long distances. Anyhow, trying to catch up now that most people are waking up and getting ready for work or still sleeping leaving few distractions (last two hours were probably better for that but it was hot and it made me lethargic and not motivated). Back to Brew Pub Bistro, after their friends got back things got a bit more active, people started to dance a bit even though there was no good place around the tables, really. At some point I pretty much shut down due to sleep deficit / still adjusting and even trying to dance was futile though it did energize me briefly. I felt bad for because it was still early and I wanted to enjoy myself more but I was just dying. Eventually at like 12:11 we headed back and 12:32 reached the glorious bed and collapsed. It was beautiful.

The next morning I think I woke up before everyone around 7? And just spent some time idling until at some point Wambui appeared and offered to make breakfast while I showered. The shower used a basin of hot water + more normal shower of cold and I kind of improvised, hopefully not making too big a mess. After that I had the breakfast she made along with some ginger tea, it was an omelet with like tomato and onion and... Banana! It worked surprisingly well I have to say. Her mom woke up at some point and I got to say good bye, I feel a bit bad because I hadn't expected to be hosted and didn't have anything to really give thanks with. Anywho by then our ride had arrived and we first dropped Wambui at Strathmore University where it took a bit because some military looking police were conducting some drills and weren't letting people in. After that I was driven to the Intercontinental where I'd started a previous entry from. After a very long 10 minutes, it turned out they'd been having a businessy breakfast with someone associated with the Secretary General of the UN. We picked up Joy (the same one I met my first night here) and went to pick up Emi, a lecturer and pretty interesting person, before we headed to Naivasha. The drive was relatively uneventful and took around one and a half hours, but I would also layer find out some people refuse to go with Luis and took the slower bus because they're really scared when he's driving. I'd actually planned to use that drive to finish up a post but someone distracted me the whole way, cough. We arrived at SOPA lodge.

The nominal reason so many people were going to Naivasha (a nice lake) was because a group of law students was doing like a retreat to finish reviewing / editing / polishing an edition of a law journal and it was srsbsns for them. For me it was a chance to see a nice lake and some animals. After arriving we had some lunch, it was a buffet with a bunch of stuff but mostly Indian-y curries at least what I ate. After that they had meetings and groups to work and I just walked around for a whole looking at things, saw some zebras, some antelope like things, monkeys and the lake. I'd hoped to see giraffes since there were a couple on the drive in from the gate but I guess they were hiding. There wasn't thaaat much to see within the lodge area so after a while I went back to my room, which was very fancy seeming in a little cottage alongside other guests. Basically guests were housed in a line of cottages with 4 rooms to a cottage. There I took a nice hot shower since I felt sticky, and and took a one hour nap about until 7:30 to get ready for dinner. By this point it was dark so I did what we were told to do and called the lobby to send some guard to escort me to the lounge for dinner because hippos.

Vicious creatures they are if you get between them and water. I waited and waited. Heard someone outside my door but it was someone cleaning rooms who put in a second request to have someone pick me up (or as they say here pick me, the up doesn't exist). At almost 8 I got frustrated and started carefully walking to the lobby and luckily met up with a guard (not the one they sent for me if they ever did) and made it without being attacked. Dinner was not too dissimilar a buffet form lunch and after that went back to my room since it was dark and that's the downsides of nature tourism, well that and dangerous hippos preventing movement anyway. Decided to go to bed early to try and catch the sunrise.

Woke up at 6 and then by the time I walked to the lake I'd missed it, should have gotten up like 20 mins before. Aaah, failed chance. Still took some pics I am the early morning light and went back, idled a bit then went for breakfast at 8 like had been planned and beat everyone there but like 3 people from the group by around 30 minutes. After breakfast Luis, Emi, Joy and I went to Crescent Island which is near the lodge, and is a kind of a peninsula. It was actually very scenic and much nicer than the area within the lodge. Getting in was a bit funny because of course my uncle knew the owner of the land and he made up an excuse about how we were going to see her to avoid paying some entrance fee (which isn't even to her but to the owner of the farm that blocks access to her land, it's a bit weird). Because of this Er ended up taking to her for a bit, sweet older lady who reminisced about the olden days of Kenya and how now things were so bad. It was interesting after to hear Emi and Joy discuss how many of the things she said were settler privilege. I'd go more into detail but this is why having to catch up so much in one post is a terrible idea.

We got back to the lodge, had a quick lunch and heard about a possible shooting incident at Strathmore so Luis was getting tons of calls (as a reminder he's the dean of the law school). No one knew anything lots of worry, etc, but in the end (last I knew before heading out) it was a terrorism response drill that none of the faculty seemed to know about that may or may not have used live rounds. Seems pretty absurd since everyone was panicked, parents were calling and no one knew anything... Luis was pretty upset (rightfully). I guess it was related to the drill we'd encountered the day before dropping Wambui off. After all that finally got into my ride to Nanyuki to do something? I should know my itinerary better. That's the ride I'm on. 10 mins away as of 5:17. Things during this drive: speed bumps everywhere, random downpours, lots of scenery that could almost be anywhere except for that traditional African tree that to me feels... Primordial?, snippets of random towns and villages showing how poor Kenya is (or at least not very urbanized) might talk more about this later, how good cellphone service is that I almost never hit a dead zone even in the most random places, how long I've been writing a aaah I need a break.

Nairobi day 1, part 2

2:20 Lots of traffic leaving Africa House to drop off Raúl. Then went to Strathmore School to pick up Patrick, a 4th year law student at the school my uncle is the dean of, at Strathmore. While there just casually ran into the Spanish ambassador who he knew, which seems to be a recurring theme, who doesn't he know.

3:12 After that we went to a Njuguna Place, a type of nyama choma, where they serve grilled meat with some tomato and corn dough that is surprisingly similar to uncooked arepas, a Venezuela corn bread type thing. (Un)surprisingly one of the people that worked there recognized my uncle and gave us special meat, whatever that means. It was pretty fun roadside place, not fancy at all, eat with your hands sort of deal but yum. Then now went to pay for the safari things after lunch even though I guess technically we were supposed to go before, luckily the lady didn't seem too upset. Also learned that going with people wouldn't substantially have added to the costs of the safari, something to keep in mind for the future I was told.

5:51 After dropping Patrick off we went to Westgate Mall to exchange some money. If you're worried about my being here maybe don't Google it or events that may have happened there. They now have metal detectors and bag x-rays to get into a mall, ok? We then took quite a while in safaricom (the Telcom operator) to switch my sim card to my nexus 6p since the 4's battery was just too far gone and my plan to share battery responsibilities failed. Apparently the airport reseller does some sketchy stuff since the guys at this office were really surprised by the name registered into the account or that we never had to show id or anything. It took a while to transfer stuff and I took advantage to up my data a bit. Then got a couple of disposable razors and contact solution and am now waiting in a church parking lot for Wambui to pick me up while my uncle goes to mass.

Nairobi day 1, part 1

7:20 Woke up and did morning stuff, realized I left my razor at home qq. Looked around my room and balcony, so pretty then got ready for breakfast.

9:02 Had a lovely breakfast, managed to snap a picture of the initial plate but don't really feel comfortable photographing while eating with the house owner since u don't really know him. We're doing a tour at 10:30 when my uncle, Luis, and Raúl get here. Apparently Alan wants to expand the built area to save some of the land around here by building like a hotel /restaurant in the same style as the house. Breakfast was some tasty fruits to start off, grapes, mango, cantaloupe, and pineapple, followed by eggs with very orange yolks, toast with jam and tasty little breakfast sausages with a passion fruity juice. Not a bad way to start the day! Afterwards we walked towards the edge of the property where it meets some train tracks, which apparently there'd been a plan to tear this place down to make room for but something something my uncle was involved in some negotiations to help that not happen. Anywho, at the edge you get a pretty good glimpse of the National Park where you could see zebra and some kind of deer? I'm not really sure. Alan offered to get me some binoculars to see them better and they did help a lot. Tried to photograph through them and I guess you can get the idea... (assuming this is the future where I have enough data to upload images).

After that went back to my room's balcony since I'm not super sure what to do until 10:30.

10:17 Walked around a bit chatting with people and taking in the various parts of the house, it started to rain as it is indeed supposed to be rainy season which is a bit unfortunate for my trip's timing but c'est la vie. Then I've been idling in my balcony for a bit just taking I'm the park while listening to rain. Not bad. I'm feeling I definitely need to get a sim card for this phone though, or at least more data if only to upload more pics before I go home.

10:40 I guess due to rain inspired traffic (and if I had to bet a mix of Venezuelan and Kenyan attitudes about punctuality) my uncle will be at least 30 minutes late. Funny story, he's had his dog for 2 years because the previous one way killed by lions around "there" he said pointing somewhere. OK maybe not so funny D:.

11:06 While waiting got to hear Alan's story about how he ended up here, starting with a stint in Nigeria during the Nigeria-something? Conflict then he quit and went to Paris and drive a Volkswagen bus down through the Sahara and was in Nigeria for a bit, came to Kenya and stayed with the Turkana for a while and learned about their art getting a collection which he later showed in Nairobi. It caught the eye of Murundi which seems to be a big name around these here parts, but basically Alan then went back and did more collection and production of local art, then a Texan businessman bought out his exhibition, it toured, at some point Murundi asked him about setting up a Pan-African arts and culture place where people could show things off, and that's how this house came to be. He's basically been here since the 1970s. The story was a bit disjointed but wanted to write it down during an intermission before I forgot, haha.

1:06 On my way to the next thing after packing up. It seems like tonight I'll be hosted at Wambui's family's house tonight, aah, makes me wish I'd been more prepared with thank you gifts of some sort. Lunch will be at some traditional eatery thing? Not really sure, so many words in languages I don't have any familiarity with are hard to remember. The tour was pretty nice except that it basically seemed like every item was from a different part of Africa and a different artist, it was hard to keep track. Alan has had a rally interesting life though to have such an extensive collection and I'm quite thrilled to have had the experience to stay at that house. During the tour we got to hear a musician who is a part of the band his foundation sponsors who kind of invented his own instrument by melding am Egyptian harp and a thumb piano over a smallish drum. The songs were lovely and I kind of wish I'd gotten a longer recording. So far, so exciting though. Gonna post up to here I guess and wish I could upload more of the pictures.

Nairobi night 1

11:55 So so so, where'd I leave off? I think I was in traffic to pay for parking. After that we got to a friend/acquaintance? of my uncle's house which is apparently pretty well know with one of the most extensive collections of African art and is next to the National Park. It's called Africa House and it's really nice, though *cough* where's the wifi. On that topic sort of regretting my plan to use my nexus 4 as my phone /data source and my 6P for photos and usage because I forgot just how bad the battery had gotten on it, might have to reconsider the sim card I got and get another one? Idk...

Regardless on to the happenings. My uncle'd come to pick me up with his friend Smith who's going to Chicago for a master's in law soon. After arriving and meeting Alan and two of my uncle's friends/coworkers? Joy (she a name pin she wears when meeting new people, nice of her) and Wambui. I feel like we got there a bit later than Alan would have liked but I don't control the planes D:

We sat down for dinner and started off with some nice tomato soup and a Kenyan version of chapati along with some local beer, er... Tusker. I guess it was fine though to me beer is still beer. The soup was nice though. Then we had some corn on the cob using a carved bone as the cob, mine had an elephant on the end you hold, followed by a refreshing garden salad and some pickles. The main course was chicken in a red coconut curry type sauce which was tasty, nothing too unusual yet. The dessert was some ice cream over fruit salad (apparently some of the fruits were gifts from the Russian ambassador, my uncle knows people and knows people that know people I guess). After that I went to my room which is very pretty.

Even the bathroom is nice and semi open air though still closed. But anywho, after the dinner everyone but me left and we're reconvening at 10:30 but breakfast is at 8. I treated most of my clothes with a mosquito repellant thing, took a nice shower and I guess am about to sleep, let's see what my first actual day is like since night time hides a lot.
